Sligo County Council 1916 Remembrance

In what was a historic year for Ireland, Sligo County Council celebrated Remembrance Day with a Civic reception in the Sligo Park Hotel.

The Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Councillor Rosaleen O’Grady made a presentation to the families of the men and women with Sligo connections involved in the 1916 Rising.

Opening her address, the Cathaoirleach quoted historian Tim Pat Coogan ‘The Commemoration of 1916 should not be a time for ‘soft words and platitudes’ but a realistic appraisal of the events and their impacts. It reflects great credit on the Members of the 2016 Steering Group that this has been a guiding theme from the outset, and the programme of events and activities they have developed for the year has involved extensive consultation and engagement with all stakeholders.
